Architectural Design V (ARC60608)
About
Architectural Design V (ARC60608) The project demonstrates an ability to design architecture that is context-responsive, socially driven, and technically integrated, positioning the learning centre as an urban catalyst that strengthens community identity, activates the street, and contributes meaningfully to the heritage townscape.
Phase 1:
Preliminary Studies - Townscape Appraisal & Mini Urban Intervention
In Phase 1, we were required to critically engage with the urban context through townscape appraisal and mini urban intervention
exercises. This phase encouraged a deeper understanding of the site’s character, identity, and sense of place by examining both its physical form and social dynamics at macro and micro scales. Through observation, mapping, and theoretical interpretation, students reflected on how people experience and use the urban environment. The findings informed a responsive mini urban intervention, allowing students to translate analysis into design intentions that enhance place-making, community interaction, and the overall quality of the public realm.

Project Phases 2 & 3:
Learning Centre for the Urban Community, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur
This studio project explores architecture as a tool for urban placemaking within a dense heritage context in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. The brief required the design of a Learning Centre that responds to urban street conditions, community behaviour, and heritage character, while integrating architectural theory, statutory requirements, tropical design strategies, and building services. The project progressed through Architectural Design Strategy (Phase 2) and Design Development & Detailing (Phase 3)
Building upon the established strategy, this phase translated concepts into a resolved architectural proposal of a 3–5 storey learning centre (1200–1300 m²). The design developed form, space, circulation, façade, and public interfaces to support learning, social interaction, and cultural exchange. Strong emphasis was placed on tropical passive design, façade articulation responsive to heritage context, and the integration of structural systems, lighting, acoustics, fire safety, accessibility (OKU), and building services. The final outcome demonstrated a cohesive architectural language supported by detailed drawings, models, and diagrams.
